Winter is upon us, what can we do to prepare?

This time of the years is usually about food, gifts and loved ones.  It can be hard to think about the “what if” part of life.  For example, what if there is a ice storm.  What if there is a blizzard?  Are you prepared?  Will you be traveling on the roads, will you be spending time in a part of the world that is more remote?  Winter can be the most unforgiving season.  So it is important to make sure that you have given yourself what you need to be prepared. 

In either case, we want to provide a small list of things you should think about.

Flashlight and extra batteries for your home and your car.
Extra food and bottled water. High energy food, such as dried fruit or candy, and canned food requiring no cooking or refrigeration is best.
Manual can opener (just in case).
Extra medicine for all family member (please remember allergies) and baby items.
First-aid supplies for both your home and your car.
Heating fuel. Fuel carriers may not reach you for days after a severe winter storm.
Back-up heating source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc.
Fire extinguisher and smoke detector.
Brush up on your fire safety knowledge by visiting our fire safety section.
Battery-powered NOAA weather radio and portable radio to receive emergency information. These could be your only links to the outside.

Also Be sure to carry a survival kit (bag or pack) in your car that contains:Cell phone
Blankets/sleeping bags
Flashlight with extra batteries
Knife or leatherman tool
High calorie food for all members of your family
A can and waterproof matches to melt snow for drinking water
Sand or cat litter
Shovel
Windshield scraper
Tool kit
Tow rope
Jumper cables
Water containers
at least 2 Compass kits 
Convenient Road maps
Extra winter clothes and boots
Also, keep your vehicle’s gas tank full in case you get stranded and to keep the fuel line from freezing.  You may also need a plug for the really low temperatures.  You can’t afford to have your block freeze up.
